The Future of Education: Leveraging AI in education using Design Thinking, Gamified Learning, and a Narrative Based Curriculum

I began to explore a new dimension in lesson planning by integrating a narrative approach through the use of Classcraft Quests. This innovative method injected a significant level of engagement into the curriculum, akin to the feeling of stepping into your favorite video game and being fully absorbed in its captivating storyline and immersive world. While Classcraft predominantly draws inspiration from fantasy narratives similar to popular games like World of Warcraft, I ventured into envisioning diverse storylines that could be rooted in various genres of storytelling.


Delving even deeper into this concept, I contemplated the idea of empowering my students to actively participate in the storytelling process through the application of design thinking principles. By allowing students to contribute to the narrative as they progress through the storyline, not only are they exposed to a wide array of concepts and ideas aligned with the course's learning objectives, but they also develop essential 21st-century skills through the application of transferable knowledge.


This approach not only enhances the students' understanding of the subject matter but also fosters creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. By immersing themselves in the interactive narrative, students are not only learning the content but also honing their abilities to think outside the box, work as a team, and adapt to evolving challenges – all essential skills for success in today's rapidly changing world.


The Power of AI in Narrative-Based Learning

I worked on this project diligently for several years, utilizing a wide array of skills acquired through my background in graphic design and production. However, the landscape changed significantly with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. The integration of various AI tools has revolutionized the educational sector, enabling both learners and educators to engage in a dynamic, student-centered environment. This shift has paved the way for the implementation of approved AI tools that play a crucial role in fostering narrative development within the learning process.


One of the key methodologies that has gained traction in this context is Learner Experience Design (LXD). This approach emphasizes creating a cohesive and engaging learning experience for students, encompassing a range of activities such as storyboarding, background music composition, scripting, and image creation. In this model, teachers transition into facilitators who actively participate in the learning journey by collaboratively constructing narratives with their students.


Generative AI tools have emerged as valuable assets in crafting compelling storylines, providing educators with the means to guide the narrative development process effectively. By offering proper instructions on prompting and selecting outcomes that align with the overarching storyline, AI platforms like Canva and MagicSchool have become instrumental in developing narrative-based curricula that cater to diverse learning styles.



Embracing this innovative approach necessitates a paradigm shift for educators, urging them to adopt a holistic perspective that prioritizes learning outcomes and conceptual understanding over mere content delivery. By incorporating the principles of Understanding by Design (UBD) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), facilitators can establish a solid foundation upon which students can actively engage and build their knowledge.


Example of Learner Experience Design in Action

Imagine a captivating history class where students are not mere spectators but adventurers delving into the mysteries of ancient civilizations. Instead of monotonous textbook readings, they are on a thrilling quest to unearth artifacts and unlock the secrets of the past. Equipped with advanced AI tools, students craft intricate storyboards and bring ancient relics to life through vivid imagery.


As they script dialogues for the characters they encounter on their expedition, students immerse themselves in interactive storytelling, gaining a profound understanding of historical contexts. The addition of background music tailored to different eras enhances the immersive experience, transporting students through time.


For example, a student may utilize Canva to meticulously design a scroll illustrating the laws of Hammurabi, followed by employing MagicSchool to animate a thought-provoking discussion among ancient Babylonian citizens regarding these laws. This innovative approach empowers students to actively engage in their learning process, transforming them from passive recipients of information to creators and narrators of their educational odyssey.


The Future of Education

This is one of the necessary next steps of education as the world is changing and becoming more advanced. When learners are asked to produce the same work samples that we produced in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, and even the 2010s…they could just get AI to easily do it. However, when they have to develop through a design process and a storyline…well, now that will require some real collaboration, communication, and creative/critical thinking.


As society progresses, the traditional methods of education must evolve to keep pace with the changing landscape. The demand for skills that go beyond rote memorization and replication is increasing. Students now need to not only absorb information but also apply it in innovative ways. By embracing a more dynamic approach to learning, individuals can cultivate essential skills such as problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork.


One key framework that supports this shift is Bloom's Taxonomy, a classification system that categorizes educational objectives. By leveraging Bloom's Taxonomy, students can progress from basic knowledge acquisition to higher-order thinking skills like analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This progression empowers learners to move beyond being passive recipients of information to active creators and contributors.


Assessing students' development within this framework involves more than just traditional testing methods. Self-evaluation plays a crucial role in allowing students to reflect on their learning journey and showcase their growth. By encouraging students to articulate their reasoning and provide evidence of their learning outcomes, educators can gain deeper insights into each individual's progress and areas for improvement.


In conclusion, the integration of design processes, storytelling, and collaborative learning experiences into education not only prepares students for the challenges of the modern world but also nurtures essential skills that will serve them well in the future. By embracing innovative approaches and leveraging frameworks like Bloom's Taxonomy, educators can foster a generation of creative, critical thinkers ready to tackle the complexities of tomorrow.
